The ProSafe Certified program was designed in response to the US government's food safety concerns, as addressed by the FDA and USDA in their "Guide to Minimize Microbial Food Safety Hazards for Fresh Fruits and Vegetables." This guide describes "Good Agricultural Practices" (GAP's) which, when applied, will reduce food safety hazards. These GAP's are now the de facto standard for producers and suppliers of fresh fruits and vegetables. Compliance with these guidelines, and effective reduction of the true risks associated with produce production and handling, are the standards by which all operations are now evaluated. Although many produce companies have already developed their own food safety programs, customers are now demanding independent third party audits to verify that these programs comply with government guidelines.

The ProSafe Certified program provides recognition for those companies who want to be more proactive in their customer-vendor alliances. ProSafe Certification offers the third party assurance to customers and consumers through its certification mark on shipping cartons and retail packaging.
